The transition period provided for by the United Kingdom’s withdrawal agreement from the European Union will end on 31st December 2020. This Client Alert lists the main changes concerning the entry and stay of the British nationals in France as of 1st January 2021, and the next deadlines.
On 31 December 2020 at midnight the Brexit transition period will end. The UK will become a third country to the European Union. British nationals residing in France are invited to prepare their application for a residence permit.
In a joint press release, the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs announced the gradual
opening of the borders in the days and weeks to come, according to certain procedures.
Ordinance No. 2020-460 of 22 April 2020 on various measures taken to deal with the covid-19 epidemic has extended by 6 months the validity of residence documents expired or expiring from 16 March through 15 May 2020.
Within the framework of ordinance n ° 2020-306 of 25 March 2020, the instruction of requests for residence permits by the State services as well as the validation procedure of VLS-TS will resume after the end of the period of state of health emergency. Such state of health emergency runs until 24 May 2020 but may be extended or shortened by decree.
The processing of residence permit applications is therefore suspended and will not resume until a month after the end of this period, that is, on 25 June.
